Prepare print files correctly – 10 tips for the best print result
Perfect print data for excellent print results
When it comes to perfect printing, it’s not just the press that matters – the print file itself also plays a crucial role. An improperly prepared file can lead to blurry images, incorrect colors, or trimming issues. To ensure your print project turns out perfectly, we’ve compiled the ten most important tips for creating print files.
1. The right resolution – 300 dpi for crisp results
To ensure razor-sharp prints, images should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi (dots per inch). Lower resolutions can result in blurry or pixelated output.
2. CMYK instead of RGB – the right color model
Monitors and screens use the RGB color mode, while presses use CMYK. To avoid color shifts, prepare your print files directly in CMYK.
3. PDF as the preferred file format
The best format for print data is the PDF/X standard. PDF files are robust, embed fonts, and help prevent issues with transparencies or color conversions.
4. Add a 3 mm bleed on every side
To keep important elements from being cut off, add a 3 mm bleed on every edge. This provides enough tolerance for final trimming.
5. Maintain a 5 mm safety margin
Keep key text and logos at least 5 mm from the edge so they aren’t accidentally trimmed.
6. Embed fonts or convert to outlines
To ensure no fonts go missing or get substituted, embed all fonts in the document or convert them to outlines.
7. Observe minimum line weight
Hairlines can break or disappear in print. A line weight of at least 0.25 pt ensures good visibility.
8. Use high-quality background images
Only use high-resolution images and graphics. Create gradients cleanly to avoid banding or irregularities.
9. Use rich black for deep blacks
Achieve a deep black with the combination 60% Cyan, 40% Magenta, 40% Yellow, and 100% Black (C60 M40 Y40 K100). Pure K100 often appears dull or grayish.
10. Final preflight check
Before uploading or printing, check the file for resolution, bleed, color mode, and embedded fonts to avoid print errors.
